The odds of filling out a flawless NCAA Tournament bracket are 1 in 9,223,372,036,475,775,808. That’s how many different combinations can be constructed from a 64-team field.

If you’re still holding a bracket without a blemish by the Sweet 16 round, consider yourself lucky. Most pool participants have heaved their picks into the trash at this juncture of the tournament.

Following the Round of 32, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday during the first weekend of the Big Dance, remaining teams get four days off before their next matchup in the regional semifinal, or Sweet 16, round.

Eight of the schools still alive in the tourney will play on Thursday and the remaining eight play Friday. Because most of the inferior teams have been weeded out by this point, many fans and experts consider the two days of Sweet 16 action the best the tournament has to offer.

Teams that reach the Sweet 16 are just three wins away from competing in the national championship game. The winners of the regional semifinals advance to the Elite Eight and then the Final Four.

St. Bonaventure was the first undefeated team (22-0) to enter a Sweet 16 matchup and lose. The Bonnies dropped their 1968 game against North Carolina, who went on to lose to UCLA in the national title bout.

North Carolina, Duke and Kentucky each have 21 Sweet 16 appearances, which is tied for the most. Louisville and UCLA have reached the regional semifinal 17 times.

From 1981 to 1993, the UNC Tar Heels advanced to the Sweet 16 every year. The Blue Devils hold the second-longest streak at 10 years.

There have only been two instances where a school seeded No. 14 or higher reached the Sweet 16. The first was Cleveland State in 1986 while Chattanooga did it 11 years later.

The history of the term “Sweet 16” dates back to 1932. The state of Kentucky had held a high school boys' basketball tournament every year since 1918 and after switching from an 18-region tournament to a 16-region tournament in 1932, the phrase “Sweet 16” was adopted.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association actually trademarked the conjoined words in 1988. So when the NCAA requested to use the official phrase in the media a few years later, the KHSAA asked for a nominal fee, which was provided. Every game of the Sweet 16 can be watched live on national television on either the CBS or TBS networks.
